Although this establishment now serves Chinese food, to me it is not the crowning jewel of this eatery. It has truly stood the test of time. As a young boy, mom and dad would slip me a few bucks, I'd get on my bike and pedal up there, back when the original owner was working his own place, breading and seasoning by hand (hint: this was in the late 70's). This was THE weekly treat for me to take this delicious, crispy, one of a kind taste home in the basket of my bike and delve into a taste sensation. The "Colonel" got punk'd everytime, hands down. You do not go here to sit in, you don't go here to take in the "ambiance"... It was never, ever the way this place was supposed to be. This is a place you order, pick up and just go home to enjoy those juices that will grace your chin. you sit at home and enjoy it at home, because you know you'd feel just a *twinge* of guilt knowing that someone else nearby was not enjoying this delectable treat. I just visited John's Place for the first time after hearing many positive things about it. My friends were right – this place is amazing. I tried the tortellini, and my girlfriend tried the lasagna. The restaurant supports local farmers and serves foods from around the South Vancouver Island area. This isn't one of those BIG plate Small food places that charges a fortune. My FAVOURITE restaurant in Victoria. I know why my husband likes it here but it is my favourite too. They have a lot of kinds of alcohol and cocktails and light meals and are spi c and span. I stumbled accross Vic's Steakhouse last Friday and was more than happy I did. I was staying in the James Bay area for a week and was surprised that I hadn't heard of this gem from more people! We sat in the lounge and were served by a bartender who was charismatic and knowledgable. The service was prompt but not rushed, and we were treated to great music by a live band. I ordered the halibut, as I do not eat meat, and it was done perfectly. Very simple but flavourful at the same time. My companion ordered a steak and said it was one of the best he had experienced in Victoria so far! We shared a home made ice cream sandwich for dessert and at the end I was so full we ended up staying and enjoying the band for another cocktail. I would reccommend this restaurant to tourists and locals alike and will definitely return! Read more
